If you have downloaded an image from the web and your computer refuses to open it, there is a good chance it is a WebP. Websites serve WebP because it is small, but a lot of software outside the browser does not recognise it, and most government portals will not accept it as an upload.

Converting to JPG solves that: a JPG opens in anything, anywhere, and is accepted everywhere.

The file will usually get somewhat larger, because WebP is the more efficient format. That is the price of universal compatibility, and for a document you need to submit it is a price worth paying.

Questions

Why will my computer not open a WebP?

WebP is a web format, and support outside browsers is patchy, especially on older systems. Converting to JPG makes the file open anywhere.

Will the quality drop?

Slightly, since both formats are lossy and the image is being re-encoded. At the default quality the difference is not visible in normal use.

My form rejected a WebP upload.

Most portals accept only JPG, PNG and PDF. Convert it here and upload the JPG instead.

Is this tool free?

Yes. Every tool here is free, and you do not need an account, an email address or a phone number.

Is my file uploaded to your server?

No. This tool runs inside your own browser, so the file never leaves your phone or computer. Once the page has loaded you can even switch off your internet connection and the tool will still work.

Which files can I use?

This tool accepts WebP (.webp). The largest file it will take is 25 MB.
