This is the conversion to reach for when a PNG is too large to upload. For a photograph, JPG is routinely five to ten times smaller than the same picture as a PNG, with no difference most people can see.

The one thing to know is transparency. PNG can store transparent areas; JPG cannot. Anything transparent has to be filled with a solid colour, and you choose which — white suits almost every form and document.

If your image is a screenshot or a drawing with sharp text, consider staying with PNG and using the PNG Compressor instead. JPG compression leaves a soft halo around hard edges, which is most visible exactly where text meets a flat background.

Questions

What happens to the transparent parts?

They are filled with the colour you choose, white by default. JPG has no way to store transparency, so it has to become something.

How much smaller will it be?

For a photograph, usually five to ten times smaller. For a screenshot the saving is less, and the quality loss is more visible.

Should I convert a screenshot to JPG?

Usually not. JPG blurs sharp edges, which is precisely what a screenshot is made of. Keep it as a PNG and use the PNG Compressor to reduce the size.

Is this tool free?

Yes. Every tool here is free, and you do not need an account, an email address or a phone number.

Is my file uploaded to your server?

No. This tool runs inside your own browser, so the file never leaves your phone or computer. Once the page has loaded you can even switch off your internet connection and the tool will still work.

Which files can I use?

This tool accepts PNG (.png). The largest file it will take is 25 MB.
