Base64 writes binary data as plain text, which lets an image be embedded directly inside HTML, CSS or JSON instead of being loaded as a separate file.

The practical use is saving a network request: a small icon embedded as a data URI arrives with the page rather than being fetched afterwards. The cost is size — Base64 is about a third larger than the original file, and embedded data cannot be cached separately by the browser.

That trade-off is worth it for small images, under a few kilobytes. For anything larger, a normal image file linked in the usual way will serve the page better.

The three output options give you the raw Base64, a complete data URI ready to drop into a src attribute, or a finished CSS background-image rule.

Questions

When is Base64 worth using?

For small images, roughly under 5 KB, where saving a network request matters more than the size increase. For larger images it is usually counter-productive.

Why is the text longer than the file?

Base64 uses four characters for every three bytes, so it is about 33 percent larger than the original. That is inherent to the encoding.

Is this tool free?

Yes. Every tool here is free, and you do not need an account, an email address or a phone number.

Is my file uploaded to your server?

No. This tool runs inside your own browser, so the file never leaves your phone or computer. Once the page has loaded you can even switch off your internet connection and the tool will still work.

Which files can I use?

This tool accepts JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF and SVG. The largest file it will take is 25 MB.
