AVIF is a newer web image format, more efficient again than WebP. Browsers handle it, but very little other software does, so an AVIF you have downloaded may well refuse to open on your computer or be rejected by an upload form.
Converting to JPG makes it universally readable. The file will usually grow, because AVIF is the more efficient format, but a JPG opens anywhere.
