PNG has no quality dial, because it is lossless: every pixel is stored exactly. The way to make a PNG smaller is to reduce how many different colours it has to store.

This works extremely well for screenshots, logos, charts and drawings, which use a limited range of flat colours anyway. A screenshot cut from thousands of colours down to 128 often halves in size with no visible change at all.

It works far less well for photographs, which contain thousands of subtly different shades. Reducing the colours of a photograph produces visible banding, where a smooth gradient turns into stripes. If your image is a photograph, convert it to JPG instead — that will shrink it far more and look better doing it.

If you need the file smaller but want every pixel kept exactly as it is, use the Lossless PNG Compressor instead.

Questions

How many colours should I keep?

For a screenshot or a logo, 64 to 128 is usually invisible. For a photograph, do not use this tool at all — convert it to JPG.

I can see stripes in the sky.

That is banding, caused by cutting the colours too far on a photograph. Raise the colour count, or better, use PNG to JPG instead.

Is this tool free?

Which files can I use?
