A GIF can hold an animation — a sequence of frames played in a loop. A PNG holds a single still picture. This tool takes the first frame of the GIF and saves it as a PNG.
Transparency is preserved, which matters because many GIFs are logos or icons with transparent backgrounds. A GIF can only store 256 colours, so the PNG will look exactly like the GIF did; converting cannot add colours that were never there.
If you want to keep the animation, do not convert it — a still image format cannot hold moving frames. Use the GIF Compressor instead to make the animation smaller.

No. A PNG is a single still image. If you need the animation, keep the GIF.
