BMP is an old Windows format that stores an image with little or no compression. A photograph saved as a BMP can be twenty times larger than the same picture as a JPG, which is why BMP files are awkward to email and routinely refused by upload forms.
Converting to JPG makes the file a manageable size with no visible difference for a photograph, and produces something every system and every portal accepts.

Why is my BMP so large?
BMP stores each pixel in full with almost no compression. That is the format working as designed; it simply makes for very large files.
Will I lose quality?
A little, since JPG is lossy, but at the default quality it is not visible. The file will be a small fraction of the size.
