JPG and PNG solve different problems. JPG throws away detail to make photographs small. PNG keeps every pixel exactly as it is and can store transparency, which makes it the right format for screenshots, logos, charts and anything containing text.

Converting a JPG to PNG stops any further quality loss from that point on, which is useful if you are about to edit the image or pass it through other software. What it cannot do is undo damage already done: if the JPG has visible compression marks around text or edges, those marks are part of the picture now and will be preserved faithfully in the PNG.

Expect the file to get considerably larger — often three to five times — because PNG stores everything exactly instead of approximating. For a photograph that is a poor trade, and JPG remains the better format. For a screenshot or a diagram, PNG is worth every byte.

Questions

Will converting to PNG improve my photo?

No. PNG preserves exactly what is in the JPG, including any compression damage already there. It prevents further loss; it cannot repair past loss.

Why did the file get so much bigger?

PNG is lossless, so it stores every pixel exactly rather than approximating. For photographs that costs three to five times the size. This is normal and not a fault.

Will the PNG have a transparent background?

No. A JPG cannot store transparency, so there is none to carry across. The PNG simply gains the ability to hold transparency if you add it later in an editor.

Is this tool free?

Yes. Every tool here is free, and you do not need an account, an email address or a phone number.

Is my file uploaded to your server?

No. This tool runs inside your own browser, so the file never leaves your phone or computer. Once the page has loaded you can even switch off your internet connection and the tool will still work.

Which files can I use?

This tool accepts JPG (.jpg). The largest file it will take is 25 MB.
