A photograph of a document taken indoors almost always comes out grey, dim and slightly shadowed. The paper looks beige rather than white and the text looks washed out. Raising the brightness and the contrast fixes it, often dramatically, and the preview updates as you move the sliders.

For a document, contrast matters more than brightness. Push the contrast up until the paper goes properly white and the text goes properly black; a little extra brightness on top helps if the photograph was taken in poor light. Ticking "make it black and white" goes further still — it removes the colour cast from indoor lighting entirely, makes text noticeably crisper, and shrinks the file considerably.

The same settings help a signature or a thumb impression that came out faint. Fix the contrast here before resizing, because shrinking a faint image makes it fainter.

What this cannot do is recover detail that was never captured. A photograph that is out of focus, or so dark that an area is pure black, has no information left in those places to bring back. Take it again in daylight if you can.

Questions

My photo of a document is grey and hard to read.

Raise the contrast first, to around 130 to 150, and then the brightness a little. Ticking "make it black and white" usually helps more than anything else.

Should I do this before or after resizing?

Before. Fixing the contrast while the image is still large gives a cleaner result than trying to rescue it afterwards.

Can this fix a blurry photo?

No. Brightness and contrast change the tones that were recorded; they cannot add detail the camera never captured. Retake it in better light.

Is this tool free?

Yes. Every tool here is free, and you do not need an account, an email address or a phone number.

Is my file uploaded to your server?

No. This tool runs inside your own browser, so the file never leaves your phone or computer. Once the page has loaded you can even switch off your internet connection and the tool will still work.

Which files can I use?

This tool accepts JPG, PNG and WebP. The largest file it will take is 25 MB.
