Front cameras mirror what they show you on screen, and some save the photograph mirrored too. The giveaway is text in the picture — a sign or a label reading backwards. Flipping left to right puts it right.
It matters for documents. A mirrored photograph of a certificate is unreadable and will be rejected, and the problem is easy to miss on a phone screen where you are used to seeing yourself mirrored.
Flipping top to bottom is rarely needed for photographs; it is mostly used for making reflections and patterns.

How do I know if my photo is mirrored?
Look for any text in the picture. If writing reads backwards, the photo is mirrored and needs flipping left to right.
Does flipping lose quality?
No. The pixels are rearranged, not recalculated.
