Photographs taken on a phone sometimes arrive sideways or upside down on a computer, because the camera recorded the orientation as a note in the file rather than rotating the pixels, and not every program reads that note.

A quarter turn fixes that, and the rotation is written into the pixels so every program shows it correctly from then on.

The custom angle is for a different problem: a scan or a photographed document that came out slightly crooked. A degree or two of correction makes a document look properly prepared. Rotating by an angle that is not a quarter turn leaves triangular gaps at the corners, which are filled with the colour you choose — white for a document, or nothing at all if you are saving as PNG and want them transparent.

Questions

Why does my photo appear sideways only on some devices?

The camera stored the orientation as a note in the file instead of rotating the pixels, and some software ignores that note. Rotating here writes it into the pixels permanently.

My scan is slightly crooked.

Choose a custom angle and nudge it by a degree or two. Watch the preview and stop when the edges look straight.

What are the white triangles in the corners?

Rotating by anything other than a quarter turn leaves gaps at the corners. Choose the fill colour, or save as PNG and pick transparent.
