640 x 640 pixels, square, which is what WhatsApp uses for a display picture.
WhatsApp will accept a larger photo and crop it itself, but it decides where to crop and it compresses the result quite hard. Supplying a square image at the right size means the picture arrives as you intended rather than as the app guessed.
For a portrait photo, "fill the frame" keeps the face central and trims the sides.

Questions
Can I just upload any photo?
You can, but WhatsApp will crop it to a square its own way and compress it. Preparing it here gives you control over what stays in the frame.
My DP looks blurry after uploading.
That is WhatsApp compressing it, not the resize. Starting from a sharp 640 x 640 image gives it the least excuse to make a mess.
Is this tool free?
