Instagram uses several shapes, and picking the wrong one means the app crops your picture for you.
A square post is 1080 x 1080. A portrait post, which takes up the most room in the feed, is 1080 x 1350. A landscape post is 1080 x 566. Stories and Reels are 1080 x 1920, the full height of a phone screen.
Choose the one you are posting and the image is set to exactly that size. "Fill the frame" crops to fit; "fit it all in" keeps the whole picture and pads the gaps, which is how you post a landscape photo to a Story without losing the edges.

How do I post a wide photo to a Story?
Choose the Story size, 1080 x 1920, and "fit it all in". The photo sits in the middle with padding above and below instead of being cropped.
