A favicon is the small picture shown in a browser tab and in a bookmarks list. An .ico file is the traditional way to supply one, and it has a useful property: it can hold the same icon at several sizes in a single file, letting the browser or operating system pick whichever fits.

The standard set — 16, 32, 48 and 256 pixels — covers a browser tab, a desktop shortcut and a large icon view. Choosing all four means the system never has to scale an icon badly.

Start from a square PNG with a transparent background, and keep the design simple. At 16 pixels across, a detailed logo becomes an unreadable smudge: a single letter or one bold shape works far better.

Questions

What size should the PNG be before converting?

Square, and at least 256 x 256, so the largest icon in the file is sharp. Smaller sizes are generated from it.

Which sizes should I include?

The standard set of 16, 32, 48 and 256 unless you have a reason to do otherwise. It covers every common use.

My icon is unreadable in the tab.

There are only 16 pixels across there. Simplify the design down to one letter or one bold shape — detail cannot survive at that size.

Is this tool free?

Yes. Every tool here is free, and you do not need an account, an email address or a phone number.

Is my file uploaded to your server?

No. This tool runs inside your own browser, so the file never leaves your phone or computer. Once the page has loaded you can even switch off your internet connection and the tool will still work.

Which files can I use?

This tool accepts PNG (.png). The largest file it will take is 25 MB.
