500 KB is about half a megabyte, and it is a limit set by portals that expect a reasonably detailed scan rather than a small photograph. Nearly any single-page scan fits inside it without noticeable loss.

The tool finds the highest quality that stays under the limit rather than simply compressing hard, so you keep as much detail as the budget allows.

If you are uploading several pages, consider combining them into one PDF with the Image to PDF tool and then compressing that instead. A single PDF is usually easier to upload and easier for the office at the other end to handle than a set of loose images.

How to use it

  1. Choose your files, or drag them onto the box above.
  2. Set the size you need, then press the compress button.
  3. Download the result. Nothing is kept once you leave the page.

Files it accepts

  • JPG
  • PNG
  • WebP
  • Up to 25 MB per file
  • Up to 20 files at once

Questions

Is 500 KB the same as 0.5 MB?

Near enough. Strictly a megabyte is 1024 KB, so half a megabyte is 512 KB. If a form says "maximum 0.5 MB", staying under 500 KB is safely inside the limit.

Should I use this for multiple pages?

Usually it is better to make one PDF from all the pages first, using the Image to PDF tool, and then compress that if you still need to.

Is this tool free?

Yes. Every tool here is free, and you do not need an account, an email address or a phone number.

Is my file uploaded to your server?

No. This tool runs inside your own browser, so the file never leaves your phone or computer. Once the page has loaded you can even switch off your internet connection and the tool will still work.

Which files can I use?

This tool accepts JPG, PNG and WebP. The largest file it will take is 25 MB.
