Animated GIFs get very large very quickly, because a GIF stores a whole sequence of frames.

Most of the saving here comes from rewriting each frame so it holds only the pixels that changed since the one before. That is completely lossless — the animation plays exactly as it did — and it typically cuts a third off the file by itself.

Making the animation smaller on screen is the next most effective step, and it is reliable: halving the dimensions cuts the pixel count to a quarter.

Reducing the colours is offered too, but it is an odd one. With a GIF it often makes the file bigger, because a shared palette stops frames differing cleanly and each one ends up carrying its own colour table. So the tool tries it and keeps the result only if it genuinely came out smaller. If your file comes back unchanged with a note saying it is already as small as it can get, that is the honest answer rather than a failure.

Browsers can display a GIF but cannot write one, so this runs on our server and the upload is deleted as soon as the result is returned.

Questions

Why did reducing the colours not help?

With animated GIFs it frequently does not. A shared palette interferes with the frame-to-frame differences that make a GIF small. The tool tests it and keeps it only when it actually helps.

What is the most reliable way to shrink a GIF?

Reduce the size on screen. Halving the width and height leaves a quarter of the pixels and always makes a large difference.

Does the animation still play?

Yes. All the frames and their timing are preserved.

Is this tool free?

Yes. Every tool here is free, and you do not need an account, an email address or a phone number.

What happens to my file?

The browser cannot read this format, so the file is sent to our server, converted, and sent straight back. The uploaded file and the result are deleted as soon as you download them, and in any case within 60 minutes. They are never added to the website media library.

Which files can I use?

This tool accepts GIF. The largest file it will take is 25 MB.
