50 KB is a common limit for a passport photograph on an application form. It is achievable for most photos without the result looking damaged, which is why it is used so often.

The tool tries quality first. It saves the image at several quality levels and measures the actual file each time, keeping the best one that fits under 50 KB. If quality alone is not enough, and you have left the resize option ticked, it reduces the dimensions in steps and tries again.

If you are preparing a passport photo, set the dimensions first with the Passport Photo Resizer and compress afterwards — or use that tool's own "keep it under" box and do both in one go. Compressing a very large photo down to 50 KB and only then resizing it wastes quality, because you throw away detail twice.

The result panel shows the original size, the size you ended up with and the percentage saved, all measured from the real file rather than estimated.

Questions

Will my photo still look alright at 50 KB?

For a normal passport-size photo, yes. The smaller the image is on screen, the less data it needs, so a 413 x 531 photo at 50 KB looks fine while a full-size camera photo at 50 KB would not.

Should I resize or compress first?

Resize first, then compress. Setting the dimensions you actually need removes most of the data by itself, so the compressor has far less work to do and the result looks better.

Is this tool free?

Yes. Every tool here is free, and you do not need an account, an email address or a phone number.

Is my file uploaded to your server?

No. This tool runs inside your own browser, so the file never leaves your phone or computer. Once the page has loaded you can even switch off your internet connection and the tool will still work.

Which files can I use?

This tool accepts JPG, PNG and WebP. The largest file it will take is 25 MB.
