A passport photo is measured in centimetres, but an online form wants pixels. The two are joined by DPI, the number of dots printed per inch. At 300 DPI a 3.5 x 4.5 cm photo works out at 413 x 531 pixels, because 3.5 cm is 1.378 inches and 1.378 x 300 is 413. That single sum is what this tool does for you.

Pick the size your form asks for, choose how the photo should fit the frame, and you get an image at exactly those pixel dimensions. "Fill the frame" keeps the photo sharp and trims whatever does not fit, which is usually what you want for a head-and-shoulders picture. "Fit the whole photo" keeps every part of the picture and pads the sides with white instead.

Many forms also set a maximum file size in KB. There is a box for that here, so you can set the dimensions and the file size in one step rather than running the photo through two tools.

For the best result, start from a photo taken straight on against a plain light wall, with your face filling most of the frame. Enlarging a small or blurry photo cannot add detail that was never captured. Always follow the size stated in your own form or notification.

Questions

What size is a passport photo in pixels?

It depends on the DPI. The common 3.5 x 4.5 cm photo is 413 x 531 pixels at 300 DPI, or 207 x 266 pixels at 150 DPI. 300 DPI is the usual choice because it is sharp enough to print. The tool works this out for you when you pick a size.

My photo looks stretched. What went wrong?

That happens when the original is a different shape from the frame you asked for. Choose "Fill the frame and trim the edges" instead: the photo keeps its proportions and the parts that do not fit are cut off. If you need every part of the picture, choose "Fit the whole photo" and the gaps are padded with white.

Can I make the photo both the right size and under a KB limit?

Yes. Fill in the optional "keep it under" box with the limit your form gives. The tool sets the dimensions first, then lowers the quality until the file fits, and tells you the size it reached.

Is this tool free?

Yes. Every tool here is free, and you do not need an account, an email address or a phone number.

Is my file uploaded to your server?

No. This tool runs inside your own browser, so the file never leaves your phone or computer. Once the page has loaded you can even switch off your internet connection and the tool will still work.

Which files can I use?

This tool accepts JPG, PNG and WebP. The largest file it will take is 25 MB.
